How to Choose the Right Motorcycle Jacket: A Buyer's Guide

Buying a motorcycle jacket is one of the most important gear decisions you'll make. It's your first line of defence on the road — and it's something you'll wear every single ride. Get it right and it'll protect you, keep you comfortable, and last for years. Get it wrong and you'll either never wear it or wish you had something better when it counts.

Here's what to look for.

Protection First

The most important job a motorcycle jacket does is protect you in a crash. When shopping for a jacket, look for:

CE-rated armour — CE Level 1 or Level 2 armour at the shoulders and elbows is the minimum standard. Level 2 offers higher impact protection and is worth the investment for regular riders. Back protection is increasingly standard — look for jackets with a back armour pocket at minimum.

Abrasion resistance — The outer shell material determines how well the jacket holds up in a slide. Leather is the gold standard for abrasion resistance. High-quality textiles with UHMWPE or Kevlar blends offer comparable protection with added versatility.

Construction — Seam placement matters. Stitching on high-impact zones weakens the garment on impact. Look for lap-stitched or double-stitched seams and reinforced panels in key areas.

Fit and Comfort

A jacket that doesn't fit properly won't protect you the way it should — and you won't want to wear it.

  • Armour should sit directly over the shoulders and elbows, not shift around when you move
  • The jacket should be snug but not restrictive — you need full range of motion on the bike
  • Check the fit in a riding position, not just standing up straight
  • A longer back hem prevents the jacket from riding up and exposing your lower back

Material

Leather — The most proven material for abrasion resistance. Durable, moulds to your body over time, and looks the part on and off the bike. Requires more care and can be less comfortable in hot weather.

Textile — More versatile across conditions. Modern textile jackets with UHMWPE or Dyneema blends can match leather for protection while being lighter and more breathable. Better choice for commuters and adventure riders.

Denim — Premium moto denim with cut-resistant lining offers solid protection for urban and casual riding, with the added benefit of looking like normal clothing off the bike.

Weather and Conditions

Think about where and when you ride most.

  • Hot weather — Look for ventilation panels, mesh zones, and lightweight construction
  • Cold weather — Thermal liners, windproof outer shells, and tight cuffs are essential
  • Wet weather — Waterproof membranes or removable liners keep you dry on the commute
  • Year-round — A jacket with a removable liner gives you the most flexibility across seasons

Style

Protection and fit come first — but there's no reason your jacket can't look good too. The best moto jackets transition from the bike to everyday wear without looking out of place. If you're commuting or riding in the city, a jacket that works off the bike is a practical advantage.
